There are certain tasks and responsibilities that come with RV ownership, and maintenance is one of the biggest ones. Of course, it’s only big in that it is the one that requires the most of your attention. There isn’t actually that much required to maintain and care for your RV, so long as you do everything right from the start. Speaking of which, here are five RV roof care and maintenance tasks that should be on everyone’s list:
1. Regular Washing and Debris Removal
You would be surprised at just how much damage and repair can be avoided with something as simple as a routine washing and cleaning schedule for your RV roof. This includes removing debris from the roof, either by hand or with a broom or hose. You should use a mild detergent or special RV roof cleaner for washing, and make sure that you rinse thoroughly and let everything dry before doing any more repair work or starting the resealing process if that’s your next step.
2. Regular Inspections and Leak Checks
While you’re washing and cleaning your RV, you can check the roof for leaks, possible damage, and weak spots that may need to be reinforced before they become an issue. There are a lot of different places on an RV roof that things could go wrong, depending on how many accessories and vents you have. Therefore, it pays to be proactive and spend a little time inspecting things on a regular basis. You might find a small problem that could end up costing a small fortune if you had let it go. If nothing else, you’ll at least have peace of mind that your RV is in great shape.
3. Recoating or Resealing the RV Roof
Recoating is another routine part of owning an RV. Every three to five years, your RV roof will need a fresh coat of liquid rubber sealant. Make sure that you choose a product that is compatible with your base roof structure and that you follow the application process from the manufacturer to the last detail for the best results. If it seems like there are too many areas of damage or weak spots, rather than doing spot RV roof repair, you can do a full recoat to start with a fresh surface.
4. Replacing Damaged Seals and Silicone Caulking
There are seals and seams all over the roof of the RV, and they need to be properly caulked in order to prevent moisture and debris from getting in and leading to bigger damage or issues down the road. You should always check the seals and caulking to make sure it is intact and in good condition. If it isn’t, it can be scrapped and replaced, which is a project that usually only takes a few hours.
5. Checking Vents, Skylights, and Other Roof Accessories
While you’re inspecting the seams and seals, you should look at the vents and other accessories themselves. Make sure that they are in good condition, attached properly and securely, and not in need of any replacement or repair. Again, you can do all this while you’re doing your regular cleaning so that you get everything done in one trip up top. Then, you can make a list of repairs or things that need your attention and get to work. This might seem like a lot of work, but the fact of the matter is that you can do most of it, if not all of it, in a single weekend. Plus, if you’re going to protect your investment in the RV, you have to keep up with your RV roof care and maintenance to keep things in their best condition.
