There are a variety of options for roof sealants when you are trying to protect your RV. As an alternative to a complete re-roofing, a sealant is a great way to add a new layer of protection without spending a small fortune. It’s also easier and just as effective, in many cases. Choosing the right product may seem like a daunting task because there are so many different choices out there, but it’s a lot simpler than you think.

For starters, you have to know what kind of roof leaks your RV currently has. The options for available sealants may vary depending on whether your roof is fiberglass, aluminum, rubber, or another material. Plus, you’ll also want to make sure that the roof is in good enough condition to just be sealed and that it doesn’t need further repair or replacement. When considering the right roof sealant, think about the following, too:

  • What climate you live in and how much outdoor exposure the roof of your RV gets. If you park it outside year-round and only wrap it in a tarp during the winter, it might not be as protected as a roof that’s stored indoors. This may warrant the use of a heavier-duty sealant that is designed for an all-weather application or more durability over time.

  • Do you want a certain color finish? Typically, the roof sealant comes in white or black. Sometimes, the white can be colored or tinted to match the existing roof color, but it’s not common. You may also find products that are applied and show one color but then dry as a different color to ensure even application. This is a matter of personal preference, but it can be a benefit.

  • What are you sealing and why? If you are sealing joints and seams around the air conditioner or vents, for example, you’ll need a different silicone sealant than if you were repairing leaks and wanted to protect the roof with a liquid rubber sealant.

  • What do the pros recommend? It’s easy to get online and search for sealants. You can even type in searches for things like “best sealant for my [insert roof type here] and you will find all the information that you need. You’ll be able to learn about different sealants for different purposes and even gain valuable insight on roof maintenance and more along the way.

Keep Your Roof in Good Shape

Typical roofs on RVs last for decades without needing a lot of attention. Routine cleaning and maintenance can go a long way in preventing big issues down the road. If you want to avoid having to fix leaks and shop for things like sealant, make sure that your maintenance schedule is followed and that you are proactive about caring for your RV. If you’re serious about living the RV lifestyle, DIY maintenance and repair is usually just part of the territory. After all, this is a pretty big investment, and you want to protect it as best you can.

With the right roof sealant and maintenance plan, you can extend the life of your roof for several years, which means you can spend more time enjoying your RV and less time taking care of it. Make sure that you find the right products for your roof by comparing what’s out there to your needs, and by asking around if you need a little help. Routine cleaning, inspections, and maintenance will save you a fortune on costly repairs. However, when you do need sealant, you’ll have no trouble finding some of the best products ever made as long as you know what you need.
